When you learn to drive and successfully pass your test you are then in charge of a fast-moving chunk of metal that could potentially cause a lot of damage to you, other people and other cars. As a driver, you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders to do everything you can to keep yourself, your passengers and other road users safe. As drivers we should always consider others and do what we can to protect the people around us.
Here at Andy1st in the West Midlands we have some of the best driving instructors in the country who are very experienced both in teaching people how to drive but also in teaching our pupils how to stay safe by being aware of the dangers around them. Having advice and knowledge from our expert instructors allows you to put into practice the hazard prevention and observational techniques they will teach you.
The good news is that there are some really simple steps you can take to hugely reduce your chances of being in a road collision. Remember to watch your speed, the speed limits are there for a reason! When the weather is bad i.e. rain, snow and ice, particular care should be taken especially where your speed is concerned. Always ensure you and your passengers are secure. Wearing seat belts and having the correct child seats in your car are very important safety considerations. Being distracted whilst driving causes many road collisions so make sure you are not distracted by phones, the radio, passengers or other road users.
By following these pieces of advice and by noting the collision data we provide, you should have all the tools you need for staying safe on the roads. It may seem odd for a driving school to review collision data but we feel that this is both beneficial to our pupils and our instructors. We analyse the data and provide you with “collision hotspots”. This isn’t meant to scare you, in fact, quite the opposite. It is there to help you. By highlighting areas where a higher than usual number of collisions occur allows you to practice in those areas, familiarising yourself with the road layout and being able to apply extra care and attention.
In the West Midlands region, the main areas where higher than usual collisions occur are in Coventry, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Arguably, these are the busiest areas in the region and therefore one would assume that the number of accidents would be higher due to a larger number of vehicles travelling through there.
In Wolverhampton, the roads around the Mander Centre, predominantly around the Ring Road are littered with collisions as well as the Penn Road particularly at the junction of Marston Road and Oaklands Road.
In Coventry in and around the WhiteFriars Ringway is very busy and there are quite a few collisions reported there. In addition the roads near the Cathedral and the Belgrade Theatre have a large number of bumps and scrapes reported there. Perhaps it is due to unfamiliarity when visiting those places of interest.
In Birmingham, many accidents are reported on the A34 Stratford Road from Shirley through to Sparkhill and also the A45 Coventry Road specifically around the Bordesley Green and Small Heath areas. Towards the centre of Birmingham there are many road traffic changes and particular attention should be shown at the Queensway / Corporation Street area near Aston University and also the Paradise Circus area as major development work is underway there.
If you follow our advice and take extra care in the highlighted areas you’ll be helping to prevent accidents and making our streets and communities safer, happier places.
