Dealing with distractions when you’re driving causes a lot of accidents. Taking your mind off what you are supposed to be concentrating on is very dangerous, especially when you are driving. When you are a new driver, these distractions are even more difficult to deal with as your confidence or experience is not as honed as those who have been driving for a few years.

The Government have worked tirelessly over the past few years to help reduce the number of accidents involving new drivers. The Pass Plus course was devised specifically for this purpose. PassPlus courses offer you “extra” lessons after you’ve passed your test. The course is a series of 6 lessons which help teach you how to drive on the motorway or in the dark for example, situations you might never have experienced in your driving life so far.

Here at Andy1st in Greater London we consider that the safety of our pupils, their passengers and other road users is paramount. With this is mind we have researched and analysed certain data that helps keep our instructors and their pupils up to date with changes in traffic systems and “hotspot” areas. This exercise is not meant to scare anyone or pressurise you, it simply serves to provide much needed and valuable information when keeping safe on the roads.

As we’ve said previously, being distracted can cause you to lose focus and make wrong judgements. Perhaps if you enter an unknown junction or one that has a tricky layout, this can cause you problems. This is why we provide the data we do as it alerts you to troublesome areas which have a higher than average number of collisions recorded at them. You and your instructor can then practise them and build up your confidence.

So, in Greater London we have identified a few tricky areas. Clearly with the sheer size of the Greater London catchment there are many hotspot areas but those local authorities who had the highest number of road collision casualties in 2013 were Barnet, Croydon, Westminster, Wandsworth, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets. Westminster saw the highest number of accidents and these were mainly around the Royal Opera House area and in and around Brook Street and Oxford Circus.

Lambeth followed closely behind Westminster, again with a higher than average number of collisions in the Greater London area. The largest number of accidents were seen in the Brixton district, close to the Brixton Academy and near the station. Quite a few accidents were noted along the A202 near to the Oval station too.

Barnet reported its highest number of collisions in both the Burnt Oak and Brent Cross areas. In Burnt Wood, the A5 has its fair share of accidents all the way through to Edgware and if you need to use the Brent Cross Interchange or Flyover which runs above the North Circular Road, then please apply extra care and attention there.

As we have said, we are not trying to put you off travelling these routes, we are simply making you aware of areas where accidents are happening frequently for a whole host of reasons. Keeping your focus and concentration when approaching these routes will ensure you stay safe on the roads.
