All of our instructors are very familiar with the areas they cover. They know the junctions to look out for and will take you along roads that will serve to maximise your experiences. Driving is about concentration, focus and practice. Even after years and years of driving, there will always be a situation you have never experienced before and so it’s important to be vigilant at all times. Not only will you spend time on the basics of learning to drive and the manoeuvres necessary for your practical test, you will also work hard on hazard perception. Detecting possible collisions forms a large part of the theory test that needs to be sat and passed before taking your practical test. This is why our instructors work with you in your lessons to perfect these skills too.
Driving isn’t all about getting the car moving or stopping at the traffic lights, it’s about staying alert and focussed on the traffic around you and averting possible dangers. Distracted driving is estimated to be a factor in 25% - 50% of all traffic crashes. Being safe on the roads is beneficial to you, other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. We have a keen interest in road safety, well we would wouldn’t we?! We look at data detailing road collisions in local areas. This helps us pinpoint tricky junctions, traffic signals and areas where there is heavy traffic. It may seem strange that we “look for crashes” but it actually helps us and our pupils. Some pupils may be reluctant to tackle these hotspots but with help from your instructor and by practicing, these areas will be less troublesome for you.
By highlighting these local collision sites it allows you and your instructor to familiarise yourself with them time and time again. It will help build your confidence for when you have to tackle them alone. It is especially useful if these roads form part of your regular route somewhere. Again, by building up your knowledge and experience you will be able to apply the care and attention required to remain safe.
In the lovely area of Shrewsbury we have highlighted 4 areas. As we have said, these are not areas to be avoided; they are simply roads or junctions that would benefit from some practice and some care and attention. The first road is Castle Street (A5191). There are quite a few collisions on this street all the way along so pay careful attention if travelling that route. The other area is the island where Frankwell, Copthorne Road and Mardol Quay meet; again, it would be prudent for you and your instructor to have a few practices around there if you are planning to venture into that area.
Bellstone is another area of road that has had its fair share of accidents reported in the 7 years we have been looking at this data. Particular attention should be paid to the stretch between Bridge Street and Claremont Hill. Finally, the Smithfield Road carries a lot of traffic into the town and therefore has many collisions reported on it. Some stretches are worse than others, pay particular attention to where Smithfield joins Roushill, Mardol Quay and Raven Meadows.
We hope this has gone some way to helping you become aware of the roads in your local area. Please don’t be frightened of them, simply concentrate, stay focussed and stay safe!
