Learning to drive, passing your test and then embarking on a life enriched with flexibility and freedom is very exciting. Learning to drive is, for some, a huge challenge as they may find it tricky and nerves may take over. For others, they find confidence and ease when getting behind the wheel and taking off on this adventure. However you approach your lessons, we want it to be a fun activity. It is a well-known fact that people learn quicker and more effectively when they are enjoying what they are doing.
We will teach you everything you need to know about the basics of driving with some added extras too! You will learn how to perform lots of different manoeuvres needed to help you out on the roads along with information on how to stay safe on the roads. We pay particular attention to teaching you valuable hazard perception knowledge and work hard on helping you develop your observation skills. It is a very different feeling after you have passed your test as you are in control of the car! You don’t have your instructor guiding you through and telling you the best way to approach things! It’s down to you!
Staying safe is mainly down to concentration and quick decision making. You must be able to spot potential hazards and make a decision on how you are going to deal with them. Sometimes, this will need to be done in a split second. It is very important to know where you are going and the route you aim to take, that way you can plan the way you’ll go and be able to foresee any tricky spots. You should stay alert and focussed on the road especially those in residential and busy areas. In these areas, there are more distractions and things to watch out for; children running in the road, pedestrians and cars braking suddenly.
At Andy1st we want you to achieve your dream of being able to drive but we also want, with our expert instructor’s tuition, for you to develop your confidence. Confidence and surety will play an important part in staying safe when you’re out driving on your own. Our instructors provide an exceptionally high standard of driving tuition and will work on boosting your confidence in areas they feel you need it. We want to give you every chance of passing that test and having years and years of trouble free driving to come.
We have highlighted some local hotspots which are not meant to scare you or unnerve you, quite the opposite actually. We thought that it would be good practise to advise you of certain junctions or signal points that cause a larger number of collisions than others. That way, you can give them more care and attention when approaching and keep yourself safe.
In the Hitchin area, the main areas for collisions are around the Walsworth Road (B656), Bancroft and Nightingale Road. This is not an exhaustive list clearly, there are collisions all over but certain roads, from the data we have analysed over a 7 year period show a significantly higher number of collisions than others.
Where the Walsworth Road meets Verulam Road, Hermitage Road and Highbury Road by the Radcliffe Arms is a notoriously bad island. Further down Walsworth Road, the junction with Hermitage Road is another hotspot for accidents.
If you travel down Queen Street, the road junctions with Portmill Lane, Hollow Lane and Biggin Lane should also approached with care.
The main Nightingale Road (A505) close to Dacre Road and Hitchin Station also has a high number of collisions reported. Again, if you continue to follow the Nightingale Road, you will reach an island where it meets Bunyan Road and Ickleford Road. This island has, proportionally, a very large number of accidents reported on it so we would advise you to apply due care and attention here.
