Being able to drive gives you a new found freedom and more flexibility allowing you to experience more things, go to new places and be able to visit family and friends more often. A lot of our pupils here at Andy1st driving school learn to drive in order to take up offers of education in various parts of the country. Having a car and being able to get home for the weekend is imperative for dropping that washing back home! Others learn because a job requires it. So many jobs / careers specify the need to hold a full driving licence as these days there can be a lot of travelling involved in certain roles.
Others learn because they just want to get around and are fed up of waiting around for public transport. Having a car means that you can pick others up and organise a car share allowing you all to share the cost and the driving. Whatever their reason for learning is, our pupils get an outstanding standard of driving tuition. Right from the first communication at our head office our pupils are guided and helped along and dealt with in a professional and friendly manner.
We will initially find an instructor in your area – we have male and female instructors who teach in both manual and automatic cars so we have something for everyone! They will get to know you and assess your experience and knowledge. That way they can prepare a learning package that is just right for you.

You will learn the basics required for getting the car moving, dealing with traffic signals and particular manoeuvres. You will then practice and practice until your instructor thinks you are ready to take your test. You will have to have passed your theory test before you take the practical test. This all sounds very simple doesn’t it?!
When you’ve passed your test the real learning begins! All that we have taught you has to be put into practise by you and you alone. This is why Andy1st spend a lot of your lesson time teaching you valuable skills such as hazard perception and observation techniques. We want you to stay safe on our roads and by making sure you have the right skills and experience will help. We certainly don’t want to scare people or make pupils nervous about driving but there are some local roads and traffic obstacles that do cause issues. We wanted to highlight these tricky local areas so that you can apply extra care and attention when tackling them. These are areas that have, according to statistics, had a large number of accidents on them. Again, don’t let this concern you, see it as knowledge worth having before you drive there alone. If these “hotspots” are pointed out, it may help you stay safe in future.
We have analysed data over a period of 7 years. In that time Derby has undergone a huge change with regards its transport infrastructure. Connecting Derby was an initiative designed to improve routes in and out of Derby. The final road, Mercian Way was completed in 2011. This has had both positive and adverse effects on the City with a large number of collisions reported on Inner Ring Road in general. This is mainly due to the sheer weight of traffic that comes and goes out of the City. Special care and attention must be paid at all stretches of the Ring Road and learner drivers would be prudent to spend some time familiarising themselves with this infrastructure whilst taking lessons.
Some particular junctions to look out for which have a higher than normal collision rate are as follows ;
Friar Gate and Ford Street (A601), Macklin Street and Abbey Street and The Underpass and Eastgate. The Pentagon has many issues and many accidents have occurred where it merges or meets Sir Frank Whittle Road and The Brian Clough Way.
We do not want you to avoid these areas or junctions, we simply want to make you aware of their issues and for you to proceed with concentration and caution at all times in order to stay safe. Our driving lessons in Derby will help you do thsi.
